““So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.”
Matthew 6:31-34 NLT
Now I am writing a post that makes my previous post differing and contrasting. There are several contrary passages in the Bible, and there are books about these things, but I’m writing what I feel is my relationship with God. He knows all of my needs so the God of heaven and earth will provide me with whatever his mind focuses on. He will give me everything I need before I join him in heaven.
He knows my voice and swallowing issues so my eating and drinking has changed dramatically. I have adjusted to these problems with his advice (and my wife’s), so I am doing okay now. The issue I have is not worrying about tomorrow. That “worry” may be the hardest command in the Bible to obey as worrying comes naturally to people. Worry never fixes anything. It can’t guarantee the result you’re praying for. All it can do is quietly kidnap the peace God wants you to have today. When you worry, you’re focused on your fears instead of trusting your Father. Fix your eyes on your problems, and worry will follow you all week. Fix your eyes and mind on God, and his Spirit meets you with life and peace.
These days I am not going to anything where eating or drinking seems to be the center of attention, but I know that God wants me there. I am trying to listen to God but I’m not there yet. Then there is conversation. I have no voice, so in a group I’m embarrassed that I can’t speak. I have one brunch meeting every week with a Sunday school leader that I have known for years. Initially we talked about several things but now-a-days I have to type on my phone to make sure he understands me (I have an app, Speechify, that will voice whatever I type). The problem with that is I can’t eat when I’m typing! But the brunch is warm and it is getting me to know how God is encouraging me.
There is another meeting, on Monday mornings, that I have. I mentored him with hundreds of spiritual questions. He still works, and every now and then he will have something at his work that he will have to do. We have always communicated about what God was doing in our lives and how we could monitor and obey him. These two guys are placed by the Master in my life to show me what I can do while my voice crumbles. God planted these guys in my life to show me not to worry, and instead, fix my eyes on the Master and focus on him. Perhaps I’ll start going to group meetings again…
